Flexible Czech: How to Improve Your Czech in a Way That Fits Your Life

Don't have time for regular Czech lessons? Read how my students are making rapid progress and gaining confidence.

I thought for a long time about how to help students who find it hard to have an online lesson every week or to do something small in Czech every day. Some have a demanding job. Some live in a different time zone. Some have a different schedule every day, so it is hard to know in advance when they will have time for lessons. Other students do have time for a lesson once a week, but it is the only 60 minutes that week when they use Czech. Often that is not enough.

Then, thanks to one of my students, I created the Flexible Czech Program!

Cassandra and her Czech lessons

Cassandra is a student of Czech from Canada, but she has lived in Germany for several years. She has been learning Czech with me for more than three years because she loves Czech. It is her big hobby.

From the start, we had one individual lesson per week. Later, Cassandra also tried a WhatsApp course, conversation lessons for two and a group conversation course. All of this worked great. Cassandra is very motivated, and on her own she actively listened to podcasts, read my newsletters and watched videos.

In 2025, Cassandra changed jobs. It was no longer easy for her to have regular Czech lessons. But she wanted to keep learning Czech. So I thought about how we could continue with more flexible time and still stay effective.

Thanks to Cassandra, I came up with the Flexible Czech Program. We have done it together every month since January 2026, and we see great results!

How the Flexible Czech Program works

At the start, we talked about what our priority is.

For Cassandra, the priority is to actively practice Czech in friendly conversation. This means talking together in Czech about our lives, the way we usually talk with close friends. Cassandra also wanted to speed up her reactions in Czech and improve her grammar. That was our plan, and we could start to do it.

Audio messages on WhatsApp

We do it like this: from Monday to Friday, we send each other audio messages every day on WhatsApp. Sometimes the message is very short. Sometimes it is a few minutes long. Sometimes we also send an interesting link, a photo or a text message.

The topics are different, but they usually reflect Cassandra's everyday life. This means travel, work, friends, TV series, books or cooking vegan recipes. These are examples of topics we talk about in our WhatsApp audio messages.

When I do not understand something, I say so. Then Cassandra explains it in other words, just like in real Czech life. Cassandra is also interested in Czech grammar, so we talk in the audio messages about grammar too. Sometimes I also explain a grammar point to Cassandra in a text message. Then we right away practice specific situations and examples in context.

When Cassandra has more time, she sends me longer messages. When she has a hard day, she sends only a short message. The important thing is that she has contact with Czech every day (even if it is sometimes only 3 minutes). In this way, her brain gets used to conversation in Czech. Then she reacts to Czech conversation automatically and naturally.

Activities in a Google document

Besides the WhatsApp messages, we also have a shared Google document where we track each week of our program. For each week, we write down our topic. Sometimes, on the weekend, when we have a break from WhatsApp messages, Cassandra writes short journaling. Or she gets a small grammar activity from me there.

Online conversation every fourth week

Every fourth week of the program, we meet for an online conversation lesson. Cassandra books it in my booking system depending on when she has time. Thanks to the online Czech conversation lesson every month, we see how Cassandra's reactions in Czech have improved. We also see how we can talk spontaneously in Czech for a whole hour, even online.

Every month in the online lesson, we also remind ourselves of our plan. When Cassandra's priorities change, we change the plan too. For example, sometimes Cassandra wants to do activities from a textbook she has. Then she wants to talk with me in WhatsApp messages about topics from the textbook (conversation topics and grammar topics). In this way, she practices new words and grammar. At other times, she listens to a podcast in Czech or watches a Czech TV series, and then we talk about it. Or she reads my newsletter, and for a few days we talk about a topic from the newsletter. It is really flexible, and Cassandra's real life always comes first.

It is not only about Czech

I do not want to be "only" a language teacher. I also want to be a motivator and a language friend. So sometimes we talk about very personal things. Sometimes they are joys, and sometimes they are worries. The important thing is that in such moments I am here as a kind of "Czech mental support".

Veronika is a great Czech teacher with amazing energy. She motivates me, helps me get past my fear of speaking, is very organized and learning Czech with her is really fun.

How effective the Flexible Czech Program is

After only two months of the Flexible Program, we could see big progress.

👉🏽 Cassandra no longer needed so much time to find the exact word she wanted to say.

👉🏽 She grew her Czech vocabulary. She could use what she learned in our audio messages in real life, because we could repeat it every day in WhatsApp messages.

👉🏽 She wrote in the Google document regularly and got my feedback. Because of this, she also learned new grammar rules. Because they came from her real life, she remembered them well.

Other students in the Flexible Czech Program

With Cassandra, I saw how much the Flexible Czech Program can help with real Czech conversations. So I started to offer it actively, and soon I got more students.

For each student, the program is a little different. It always reacts to the life and priorities of each student. So with each student, we have different conversation topics and a different Google document.

👉🏽 But one thing is the same for all of them: fast progress. You can clearly see it after only two or three months.

👉🏽 We track progress regularly, because all students agreed to video recordings of our online conversation lessons. Thanks to the lesson videos, each student can hear how she spoke after the first, second, third… month of the program.

And the difference is really big!

It is a great program for people who have no time for traditional lessons but want to keep improving.

The program is 100% adapted

I want the Flexible Czech Program to be truly flexible. So I can adapt its length too.

What does this mean?

My student Anna did the Flexible Czech Program with me every week for the first few months. She loves learning Czech. On her own, she actively listened to podcasts. She read the texts I sent her as a bonus. She also studied grammar from a textbook that I recommended to her.

The Flexible Czech Program really excited me. I can learn Czech flexibly in my own time, often even on the train.

Then she started to work in a hospital. She often comes home very late. Suddenly she did not have as much time for Czech as she had at the start. She also wanted to keep studying alone from the textbook and listening to podcasts. But it was not possible to do everything every week.

👉🏽 So we made a new plan. One week, Anna does Czech on her own (with the textbook, podcasts…) and we take a break from each other. The next week, we do the Flexible Czech Program together.

In practice, this means she has Czech in her life every week, but with me every second week. The price of such a "half flexible program" is also half.

This is possible too. The priority is that the program suits (that is, you like it) both me and you. It should also motivate both of us.

Anna's progress

By the way, Anna first contacted me in March 2026. She said she was interested in the Flexible Czech Program. We had a free 20-minute lesson together. At that time, it was really hard and stressful for her to speak Czech. She still lived in Germany then. But she and her husband planned to move to the Czech Republic to live near a Czech family. So until then, her contact with Czech was very theoretical and not very practical.

But this soon changed. After two months of our intensive audio messages, her reactions in Czech became 100% automatic and faster.

Every day I speak, write and listen to Czech. So studying is intensive, but very effective.

In two months, I can already talk about everyday life in Czech.

She speaks with much more confidence. She also started to use Czech every day in a Czech setting - for example at the vet, in shops, when she talks with her mother-in-law, or with people who come to visit them.

What will the Flexible Czech Program give you?

  • 🗣️ You will use Czech every day, not only once a week in a lesson.
Thanks to regular audio messages, you will get used to reacting in Czech in a more natural way. You will react faster and think less.
  • 🧭 You will have a clear plan and a friendly teacher who will motivate and inspire you.
Together we will set priorities and adapt the activities to them. We will also regularly check how far you have moved forward.
  • 💬 You will learn to use new words and grammar in real situations.
You will not learn only rules and word lists. What you learn, you will try out right away in conversation about your own life.
  • 🗓️ You will adapt Czech to your life, not your life to Czech.
Do you have a hard day? You send a short message. Do you have more time and energy? We can say more. Together we will agree on a pace that suits you.
  • 🌱 You will get more confidence when you speak Czech.
Thanks to regular practice, you will search for words less and react faster. Step by step, you will feel more natural in everyday conversations too.
  • 🤝 You will not be alone with Czech.
Every day you have someone you can speak Czech with. You can share your experiences, ask about things you do not understand, and get support even on days when things do not go well.
  • 📈 You will see your progress in real examples.
Thanks to regular feedback, the shared document and recordings of our online conversations, you will see how you spoke at the start and how you speak after a few months.
