Why to Use AI
Artificial intelligence is all around us. That’s a fact we can either ignore or accept and learn how to use it in a way that helps us.
Personally, I use AI every day, and thanks to that, I have more time for what I actually want to do, and I’m more efficient.
I often use Chat GPT to prepare materials for my Czech lessons, because it allows me to fully adapt each lesson to your real life and what you truly need to practice.
I also use Chat GPT when I want to practice or check my English/Italian.
And in this article, I want to inspire you on how you can use AI to improve your Czech every day for free.
Personalized GPT Profile
As a first step, I recommend creating a GPT profile and downloading the mobile app. It's for free, you don’t have to pay anything. You can also use GPT without a profile, but it’s a good idea to have one because you can enter basic information – for example, that you are an American learning Czech and you want to use the app primarily for practicing Czech as a second language. You can also mention what you enjoy doing, what your current communication level in Czech is, and what you need to practice. With a personalized profile like this, Chat GPT will give you more relevant tasks for your real life.
Here’s the information I have on my GPT profile:
Specific Techniques / Prompts
Once you have a profile and can start communicating with Chat GPT, it's good to have a plan for what you want to practice.
So the first important question:
What do you want to practice? Do you want to work with texts? Practice writing, real-life Czech situations, grammar, or just speaking?
GPT can help with everything, but you need to define clearly what you want.
And that’s what I’ll help you with now.

My Specific Tips
Working with Texts
Here are some specific examples and prompts on how you can use Chat GPT to practice your Czech. Remember, you can write prompts in any language. Chat GPT will understand and follow your instructions.
TEXT FROM NEW WORDS AND PHRASES
Is it hard for you to remember new Czech words? Chat GPT can help!
Copy the new Czech words and phrases from your last lesson into Chat GPT and write this prompt:
Write me a short text (approx. 200 words) using these words on the topic of SHOPPING in simple Czech (A2 level). I want the text to be funny and reflect my hobbies. Then write conversation questions based on the text.
This is just an example of what a prompt can look like. The key is to be as specific as possible (specific topic, language level, whether you want formal or informal language, if you want the text to be a letter, story, real dialogue, etc.).
You can then answer the conversation questions out loud or write your answers, and Chat GPT can give you grammar feedback.
SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF AUTHENTIC TEXT
Is it hard for you to read authentic texts in Czech? Chat GPT can create a simplified version of an authentic text. How?
Write to Chat GPT:
Write me an easier version of the text below in Czech (ideally for A2 level), and include English translations of words that might be difficult for a Czech learner. Then add questions based on the text.
Then paste the authentic text from the web under the prompt and send it to Chat GPT.
TRANSLATING SENTENCES
Do you sometimes use Google Translate? Try Chat GPT. I think it currently works better.
You can test it:
Translate the English text below into Czech.
+ copy the original text.
Chat GPT often understands slang and idioms. You can ask it just like you would ask your teacher.
For example:
Can you tell me what people say in Czech in a situation where in English we say: “Break a leg!”?
Chat GPT answered:
Just ask about anything you're curious about in Czech—in your own language.
Writing Practice
You can have your Czech text corrected.
Write a text in Czech, give Chat GPT a prompt, and then paste your text:
Can you check the grammar in the text below? Please list anything that is not grammatically correct underneath the text and explain the correct form. You can also give me specific examples.
Don’t know what to write about? Talk to your teacher and together create a plan that’s best for you. If your teacher knows you well, she can guide you on how to practice Czech effectively every day with just one individual lesson per week.
Real-Life Czech Situations
Do you want to know what to say in Czech in specific situations—for example, at the post office when sending a letter or at the doctor’s when you have a sore throat?
Chat GPT can write a sample dialogue and help you prepare for the situation.
You can write something like this:
I’m sick and need to go to the Czech doctor. I have a sore throat and a fever. I don’t know what the doctor will ask and what sentences I should say in Czech. Can you write a sample dialogue for me? Please use very simple words and phrases.
If you don’t understand something in the dialogue, just ask Chat GPT what it means.
For example:
I don’t understand what “Co vás trápí?” means. Can you explain it and tell me what I can say to the doctor if I don’t understand his question?
Grammar Practice
With Chat GPT, you can also ask about specific grammar topics.
Not sure when to use the Czech word KDE vs. KAM?
In which situations do we use KDE and KAM in Czech? Can you write me some real-life examples in simple Czech?
Chat GPT works like a language encyclopedia.
Speaking
And guess what! You can even practice conversation. Chat GPT works with audio messages too.
It’s easy if you have the app on your phone. But it’s important to know what you want to talk about, because Chat GPT is more encyclopedic than creative.
You can try saying something like:
Hi, I’m learning Czech and I’d like to chat with you a bit about Czech food. Can you ask me questions and respond to my answers?
Be creative and give Chat GPT detailed instructions, and it will work well and help you with your Czech.
AI or a Real Teacher?
So now you know how AI can help you practice Czech. But it’s also important to know that AI isn’t perfect, and not all its answers or feedback are correct!
I definitely recommend consulting important things with a real teacher, who can also give you tips on how to practice Czech with AI between lessons.
Your teacher can be a great motivator and inspiration on how to actively use Chat GPT every week and thus improve your Czech for the cost of one individual lesson a week.
Another important thing to know is that AI has no emotions, so it will never understand you emotionally like a real teacher would.
Another thing I’ve experienced is that when I start using Chat GPT to practice Italian, but I don’t have a specific plan from my teacher, I quickly lose motivation and end up using AI for Italian for a week at most.
But when I do have a teacher with whom I create a clear plan during the lesson—what I can do with Chat GPT every day (e.g., for 5 or 10 minutes)—and we talk about it in the next lesson and make a new plan, then it usually works well and I practice Italian every day.
So AI can be a great assistant, especially when you have a teacher who will motivate you to use AI regularly and effectively.
But the most important thing is to have a teacher who regularly asks you what you need, what your current priorities are, and how she can help you. If you and your teacher create a learning plan together that is highly effective and enjoyable for you, there is a strong chance that you will be consistent and see rapid progress in your Czech.
